Pinot Noir: red wine that is best enjoyed chilled

When talking about reds, one of the most common tips is to serve them at room temperature. Many of us have seen – in bbqs, family gatherings or friends get togethers – that there is always someone who puts a bottle in the radiator or event at the grill for a few minutes. However, this is not a universal rule: there are red wines that could also be served slightly chilled. One of these varieties is the Pinot Noir. Let us tell you why and which is the perfect temperature for a unique experience on the palate.

We oftenly say that 17 ° C is an average serving temperature, as far as reds are concerned -especially if it is a wine for aging. But what would you think, if we told you to chill a red wine to 14°C? While this is a consumption temperature that could be applied to white wines (between 10 and 14 ° C), there is a wine that delivers its best qualities at fourteen degrees: the Pinot Noir.

This is a grape variety that should not be served either too cold or too warm. Therefore, it is said that enjoying it at 14 ° C is the ideal temperature to release all the qualities or characteristics that can be found by drinking a glass of a good Pinot Noir, among which we can mention:

  • Oaky notes
  • Earthy tones
  • Plum
  • Red berries
  • Mushrooms
  • Cherry
  • Leather

Although it can be stored at room temperature, it is advisable to serve it chilled to best enjoy its good acidity and moderate level of alcohol. If you have a bottle of this Chilean wine stored somewhere in your house, we recommend leaving it for two hours in the refrigerator, 15 minutes in the freezer or 5 minutes on ice and water to reach the perfect temperature to appreciate all its qualities in terms of aroma and flavor.

Pinot Noir: how to generate the ideal conditions to store and serve this wine?

Now that you know what the ideal temperature is to serve a Pinot Noir of quality – like that of Viña Cono Sur -, take note of the following tips to maximize the experience when uncorking:

  • Storage. Keep it away from vibrations and light, where you have control of temperature and humidity. If the place is too hot, the wine may age prematurely or, in the worst case, it will ruin its flavor. To store a bottle of Pinot Noir, ensure that the place is at 10-12 ° C.
  • Pairing. A Chilean wine like Pinot Noir is perfect to accompany meats such as fish, chicken or duck, as well as mushrooms and soft cheeses. The pairing around this variety is essential to enjoy an unique experience.
